Marrakech, November 7, 2016- Built in an original style reflecting Morocco's centuries-old architectural know-how, the Moroccan pavilion welcomed the participants in COP22 with a side event highlighting the exacerbation of water scarcity due to adverse climate change effects The event, which brought together several river basin development agencies, is part of the Moroccan pavillon´s first day activities, held under the theme: water, forests and risk management. On this occasion, Representatives from the river basin agencies of Tensift, Sebou, Loukkos, Bouregreg and Chaouia as well as participants from the German Development Agency (GIZ) rang the alarm bell regarding the disastrous effects of climate change on water resources. They warned against the depletion of the non-renewable underground water resources as a result of climate change coupled with rising demand on water. The event was also an opportunity for the participants to share experiences on how to ensure a sustainable water management in light of the increasing demand on water by the sectors of industry and agriculture, adding that several plantations will be abandoned as a result of water stress. In this regards, they highlighted the pertinence of Morocco´s water strategy and called for more dams as well as the use of desalination for water supply. This event was co-organised by Morocco´s ministerial department in charge of water and the River Basin agency of Tensift in cooperation with the German development cooperation (GIZ). The first day at the Moroccan pavilion includes other side events on themes such as sewage and adaptation to climate change, risk management and forests and local authorities in the face of climate change. Each day, throughout the COP22 days from the 1st to the 18th of November, the Moroccan pavilion will host side events on specific themes relating to climate change. Starting with water forests and risks, the next days will deal respectively with the following themes: agriculture and resilience; migration, resilience and health; Industry and the coast; transport and innovation, territories and oceans, heritage and security, gender and health; finance and energy.------------------------------------- The side events will be held in the Moroccan pavilion´s conference room which can accommodate up to 180 people with the possibility of following the speakers in different languages thanks to the provision of interpreting services.
