Spain celebrates the Day of the Memory of the Shoah remembering the Holocaust

USPA NEWS - The Spanish Senate on Wednesday celebrated the International Day for the Memory of the Shoah, with an official ceremony in which calls were made to education in tolerance as the only means to prevent new holocausts in the world.

In his speech, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, called for "stop the clock" and remember the greatest tragedy of genocide in human history, which affected six million Jewish victims and other groups such as people Roma, the disabled, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses and many others persecuted and massacred. Garcia-Margallo said: "We all owe to the memory of the Shoah, his explanation and his condemnation," and it "is essential to teach tolerance and do it together."

Hence the importance of projects such as the International Initiative for the Memory of the Shoah, shared by more than thirty countries and that Spain is part since 2008, and the agreement signed by the Federation of Municipalities of Madrid, the Center Sefarad-Israel and the Jewish Community of Madrid for the creation of a Network of Cities for the Memory of the Holocaust and Prevention of Crimes against Humanity in the Community of Madrid, focused on educational activities among young people.

Moreover, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation stressed the exemplary task at Yad Vashem, "place of worship where memory and learning come together," and announced the conclusion of an extensive program of events to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and Israel. Finally, Garcia-Margallo emphasized the urgency of achieving peace. He recalled that Spain, as a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council, is trying and he does it with all his might. So, last October, the minister reiterated the position of Spain in an open discussion at the Council itself.
