The Mexican writer Fernando del Paso wins the Cervantes Prize 2015

USPA NEWS - The Mexican writer Fernando del Paso was awarded Thursday with the Cervantes Prize for Literature 2015, a recognition granted by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and is worth 125,000 Euros. Del Paso is a Mexican author, artist, painter, diplomat and academic.

The Prize for Literature in Spanish Language Miguel de Cervantes is considered the Nobel Prize of Spanish literature and last year was awarded to the Spanish writer Juan Goytisolo. His concession to Fernando del Paso recognizes the literary career of the Mexican writer, who will receive the award at the auditorium of the University of Alcala de Henares, in Madrid, in a ceremony held on April 23, 2016, date on which are commemorated the anniversary of the death of Cervantes, author of “˜Don Quixote´ and one of the most important writers of the so-called Golden Age of Spanish literature.

Fernando del Paso was born in Mexico City on April 1, 1935. Author, artist, painter, diplomat and academic, is known for three novels that are among the best exponents of the new twentieth century Mexican narrative: 'Jose Trigo', 'Palinuro of Mexico´ and “˜News of the Empire', the latter a historical novel that won prestige as a writer of that genre. According to the jury of the Cervantes Prize, the Mexican writer has made "contributions to the development of the novel that combine tradition and modernity, as did Cervantes." His work "takes risks and is innovative. His work is part of the history of Latin American literature," said the president of the jury, Ines Fernandez Ordonez.
