The Popular Party accuses the Catalan President of a coup in Spain

USPA NEWS - The Spanish Parliament on Thursday discussed the reform of the Constitutional Court proposed by the conservative Government of Mariano Rajoy to give it power to impose sanctions. All opposition rejects the reform, while the PP defends against the "coup d'etat in slow motion" from Artur Mas.

For opposition groups, with the PSOE Socialist Party ahead, reform, which gives the Constitutional Court ability to punish the authorities and public officials who violate their sentence, is unnecessary and aggravates the conflict in Catalonia because it feeds the victimhood Catalan nationalist leaders. The opposition believes that the reform aims to move the Constitutional Court "uncomfortable political decisions" regarding Catalonia, since that Court would be responsible for disabling the president of the Catalan Government, Artur Mas, freeing the Government of Spain of responsibility to apply the suspension of Catalan autonomy under Article 155 of the Constitution.

Faced with these views, the Justice Minister, Rafael Catala, said that the reform, which is handled urgently, the rule of law is strengthened. The conservative Popular Party (PP in its acronym in Spanish), which supports the Government of Mariano Rajoy, believes that reform is needed to respond to the "coup d'etat in slow motion" being carried out by the authorities of Catalonia. The reform will succeed thanks to the PP parliamentary majority, although the Socialist Party announced that if he wins the December legislative elections, repeal the reform.

In the political field, the winning coalition in the elections of September 27 in Catalonia, Junts pel Si, started Thursday contacts with left-wing formation CUP, whose ten members need to achieve an absolute majority in the Catalan Parliament. Junts pel Si sources indicated that the negotiations be held in secret to allow a rapprochement in the positions of both formations, which in some places are far apart. The CUP supports the plebiscite that had wanted to turn the regional elections are not won independence and recognizes that no social majority, and therefore rejects the unilateral declaration of independence.

It also opposes the designation of Artur Mas as president for another term, as he identified as representative of the Catalan group of corrupt politicians and as responsible for social cuts in the region. But the designation of Artur Mas is nonnegotiable for Junts pel Si that rejects any form of government that is not yet the President of Catalonia. So, negotiations are planned long and complex. The Catalan Parliament has until October 26 to constitute and ten days more to convene the investiture debate.
