Some pop culture is more equal than others. To admit that this sort of tripe is a legit contributor to culture would be to admit some dark truths about ourselves. It seems to be evidence that we are nations of deranged people, spewing empty aspirations all over the place and really thick to boot. Gogglebox is one of the rare shows that people can happily consume. Now, we are familiar with the format.
As the show becomes well-loved, casting becomes ever more important. An Orwellian exploration of what the nation is talking about in front of the television. Its genius lies in its simplicity. With little more than a tripod set-up in each living room, Gogglebox provides the reality we all got a taste for at the inception of Big Brother. The program both identifies us with broader social circles as well as inviting conversation about our owns views, and it lets us be the critic. Better than the socio-political message thought it's funny.
What Gogglebox proves is that, given a chance, human nature isn't all that bad. Its stars are not the kind you will find on proper reality television. Instead of showing us as shallow and individualistic, it tells us that what's important is watching stupid television with your best friends or family. Gogglebox shows us the reality of our viewing habits in a social expanding medium. Unlike other reality shows it doesn't feature contestants competing for screen time, it has a quick editorial turnaround.
