Eid el-Kebir finds its origins of the festival in Muslim's tradition. It commemorates Ibrahim's submission to God, which should be a model for all believers. According to the Quran, this prophet received in his dreams the divine command to sacrifice his son, Ishmael. The Story is common to the Bible.
Ismael, the son of Ibrahim, raised in faith accepts to be sacrificed by his father. The Devil intervenes and tries to convince players not to practice sacrifice, but Ibrahim threw seven stones at Satan. The father grabbed a knife and put it on the throat of Ishmael. But it can not push. When he finally manages to cut the neck, he finds that the angel Jibril (Gabriel) has prepared a sheep instead of his son and that he is standing unharmed beside him.-----------------------------------------------------------------
For Muslims, the faith of Abraham, being tested by God, was awarded the survival of his son. The Eid al-Adha remains a party celebrating the faith and mercy. This episode of the Koran refers to a Bible story, that of Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. This is interrupted by the arrival of an angel tells him that God is pleased with his faith. A ram is sacrificed instead of the young man.
EID EL KEBIR MARKS THE END OF THE HAJJ PILGRIMAGE
Eid al-Adha marks the end of another important tradition for believers: the pilgrimage to the holy places of Mecca, or Hajj. This ritual takes place between the 8th and the 13th of the month of Al-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar Dhou while Eid starts the 10th of this month. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam with the profession of faith, daily prayer, almsgiving and Ramadan.
Some rituals performed during pilgrimages to Mecca remind the episode of the sacrifice of Ibrahim. Thus, it is customary to go to Mina - place near the sacred city and supposed place where the prophet took his son - to throw stones at pillars. This act symbolises the faith and reject the temptation of the devil, with the picture of Ibrahim in the Koran.
