Since Bullhead, for which he packed 60 pounds of muscle onto his 6-foot-2-inch frame, Schoenaerts has been hailed as the Belgian Brando. “Maybe in some roles I have a physical presence and a certain brooding energy that people might interpret as macho, but I never want to emphasize that,“ he says. “The way I approach everything I do always comes down to one thing, which is love. And I don´t mean it in the flower-power type of way. I mean that, even if you look at The Drop, my character is insane, but it´s the loss of love that drives him that way.“
Matthias Schoenaerts said that the ways he perfected his English came by watching American movies.

Matthias Schoenaerts is a Belgian actor. He made his film debut at the age of 15 in Daens (1992), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He is best known for his roles as Filip in Loft (2008), Jacky Vanmarsenille in Bullhead (2011), Ali in Rust and Bone (2012), Eric Deeds in The Drop (2014), Bruno von Falk in Suite Française (2015) and Gabriel Oak in Far from the Madding Crowd (2015). In 2013, he won the César Award for Most Promising Actor for Rust and Bone. In 2015, he was named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in France.
