Spanish judges defend its independence in the fight against political corruption

USPA NEWS - The president of the Supreme Court of Spain (TS), Carlos Lesmes, recalled Tuesday that "outside the law there is no freedom, no democracy; only mirages and frustration." During his speech at the opening of the Judicial Year, the president of TS warned against secessionist adventures.

The event was chaired by King Philip VI and was attended by the highest authorities of the State. Two days before the start of the campaign for regional elections in Catalonia, which nationalists and republicans want to become a plebiscite to declare the independence of Catalonia, president of the Supreme Court, Carlos Lesmes, warned that "the unilateral breach of the values of coexistence" forged from consensus "means beyond the boundaries of democratic honesty, inherent to the rule of law." Lesmes defended the independence and professionalism of Spanish judges, particularly in relation to cases of political corruption, and called to let them work without pressure.

In the same vein the State Attorney General, Consuelo Madrigal, said that the anti-corruption prosecutors work "in the legal code" and asked to be allowed to work "without the overwhelming pressure" media and "partisan review" was expressed. Madrigal said that "all levels should strive to leave to the Prosecutor outside the political contest." Madrigal defended the professionalism of prosecutors and expressed full confidence in the members of this body of law.
