On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans area, leaving massive, almost indescribable, destruction in her wake. It changed the way thousands of New Orleans homeowners thought about their future, their identity and their citizenship. Today, 6,000 families remain displaced...
According to the statement from St Bernard Project : "Today we receive an average of 15 calls per week from individuals seeking rebuilding assistance; the average age of a caller is 63 years. We receive 25% more requests for help now than we did a year ago."
They propose different types of programs and activities, specially destinated to low-to moderate-income residents with a special focus on families with small children, the elderly, disabled persons, war veterans, and under-and uninsured persons :

- Rebuilding storm-damaged housing for families who own homes that they cannot afford to rebuild.
- Turning blighted and abandoned properties into affordably built, affordable housing for sale to qualified low-to-moderate-income families.
- Providing training, jobs and job placement in the skilled construction trades to residents who are under-or unemployed, with a focus on veterans, at-risk youth, returning citizens/ex-offenders and other individuals who are struggling to find employment.

St bernard Project proposes starting 10.00 am, August 26, 2015, ending 10.00, August 28, 2015, a 48 HOUR BUILD MARATHON. It consists for Volunteers to work 6-hour rotating shifts, rebuilding homes throughout New Orleans over the course of 48 continuous hours. The aim is to show the world how much impact positive and generous people can make in two short days!
