Joint statement on Libya of the Governments of Spain and the United States
And four other European countries
USPA NEWS -
The governments of Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States strongly condemns the barbaric acts being perpetrated by terrorists currently associated with Daesh in the Libyan city of Sirte.
“We are deeply concerned by reports that these fighters have bombed areas of the densely populated city and committed indiscriminate acts of violence in order to terrorize the population. We call on all parties present in Libya who aspire to a united and peaceful nation to join efforts to combat the threat posed by transnational terrorist groups that exploit Libya for its own purposes,“ said the six governments.
“We welcome the recent round of political dialogue with the UN in Geneva and reiterate our full support for the UN process led by Bernardino Leon, Special Representative of the Secretary General. The deplorable events in Sirte underline the urgent need for the parties in Libya to reach an agreement on the formation of a Government of national agreement, jointly with the international community, to ensure security against violent extremist groups that seek to destabilize the country,“ they added.
“We reiterate that there is no military solution to the political conflict in Libya and remain concerned the daily worsening economic and humanitarian situation. We are ready to support the implementation of a political agreement which ensures that a Government of National Agreement and its institutions to function effectively and to address the urgent needs of the Libyan people.“
