The Lower House of the Spanish Parliament backed on Thursday by a vote almost unanimous agreement signed between the governments of Spain and the United States for permanent use of the military base of Moron de la Frontera, in the province of Sevilla, by the US Army.
The agreement establishes the Spanish base in Moron de la Frontera as a permanent base of the Army and US Air Force for operations in Africa. The debate in the Lower House of the Spanish Parliament was focused on the jihadist threat and all groups but one agreed on the importance of a permanent military presence close to Africa to stop the advance of Islamist terrorism. The US military deployed in Moron main mission will respond to crises generated in Africa which threaten the security of Europe and the United States.
The only group that voted against the agreement was Izquierda Plural, which passed an amendment to the whole considering that the real aim of the US military presence on Spanish soil is no end to the jihadist terrorism but to ensure the dominance of the United States in the area, in order to control the oil. The amendment was rejected by a large majority of delegates.
The agreement ratified by the Spanish Parliament expected to be deployed at the base of Moron de la Frontera 2,200 military and 500 civilians. In the Seville air base 12 aircraft will be deployed. The US military will act in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, always with the aim of preventing conflicts and building a firewall against possible threats to US security. The US Government will invest 29 million dollars in the construction of new infrastructure and open its civilian jobs for Spanish workers.
