The conservative Popular Party (PP) of the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, lost 2.5 million votes in the local and regional elections held on Sunday in Spain. The Socialist Party (PSOE) lost 700,000 votes.
In local elections, the PP lost 10.5 points. Despite being the most voted party in the whole of Spain, the PP lost 2.5 million votes. Conservative debacle, minimized by the absolute majority it had achieved in 2011, was reflected in the loss of absolute majorities in all regions where elections were held and in Madrid capital. And that despite being the most voted party in Madrid, Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, La Rioja, Murcia, Cantabria and the Balearic Islands. It retains the majority in the North African city of Ceuta, but not in Melilla.
For its part, the PSOE lost 700,000 votes, yet they managed to preserve Asturias and recover Extremadura. Socialists lead the turn of the Spanish society left, diluted by the fragmentation of the left. The big winners of the elections were the populist Podemos, entering the 13 regional parliaments that are renewed, and the centrist Citizens (C's), which enters 10. Izquierda Unida maintains its councilors and UPyD, PP split formation, disappears in all regions.
