DAVID CAMERON AND AMITABH BACHCHAN SALUTE AND TRIBUTE TO GANDHI A UNIVERSAL HERO

USPA NEWS - David Cameron, British Prime minister delcared "Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most towering figures in world politics - now has an eternal home in our country, with the unveiling of his statue in Parliament Square today.

GANDHI WAS KILLED THERE IS JUST ONE HUNDRED YEARS AFTER THE INDEPENDENCE OF INDIA---------- David Cameron said "It was an honour to take part in the ceremony alongside his grandson Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Indian Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley and legendary film star Amitabh Bachchan ". It was time that a worthy statue of this legendary character would finally erected in tribute to what Mahatma Gandhi brought his people and his country, leading them to freedom, and the symbolism of its universal message of peace and non-violence. The celebration of the 100th anniversary of his death is a date that needs to be highly noticed and remembered to not forget and keep the memory of this hero of peace for the new generations. A bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi was opened in the British capital on Saturday to mark the 100th anniversary of the homecoming of the Indian leader.---------------------------------------------------- In 1915, Gandhi left South Africa to return home and start a fight he called nonviolent to lead India to independence. The statue was erected near the British Parliament seat, side of those great figures, including Winston Churchill, who defended the maintenance of the British Empire in India.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The erection of this statue is a tribute to one of the greatest figures of the political world," said British Prime Minister David Cameron. He participated in the opening ceremony, which was attended by the Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. British sculptor Philip Jackson is the author of the statue. Gandhi was assassinated in 1948, a few months after the independence of India. Gandhi will be the first Indian, and the only person never to have been in public office, to be honoured with a statue in the square. His memorial will stand alongside those of Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela opposite the Houses of Parliament. The 9ft-high (2.75m) bronze sculpture has been kept under wraps but Asian network reporter Poonam Taneja was given an exclusive glimpse by the artist Philip Jackson.
