Oklahoma woman dies after being shot by her 3-year-old son

USPA News - A 3-year-old boy found a semiautomatic handgun at his home in the city of Tulsa on Monday afternoon, firing a shot that killed his mother as she was tending to her other child, authorities in the U.S. state of Oklahoma said on Tuesday. The tragic incident happened at a house in Tulsa on Monday afternoon when 26-year-old Christa Engles was changing the diapers of her 1-year-old child.

As she was tending to her youngest child, her 3-year-old son managed to obtain a semiautomatic handgun and fired a single shot, striking Engles in the head. The exact time of the shooting was not immediately known, but the scene was discovered at about 4:34 p.m. when Engles` mother-in-law arrived at the residence. "The victim was found in the front room of the house as if she was changing the one-year-old`s diapers," police spokeswoman Jillian Roberson said. "The three-year-old was present and had walked around the house." Engles was rushed to St. John Medical Center but was pronounced dead at 5:38 p.m. Roberson said there was no evidence of forced entry into the house, and a subsequent investigation confirmed that the child had accidentally shot his mother. "The three year old was interviewed by child specialists and confirmed what the evidence led investigators to assume," the spokeswoman added. Engles was living at the residence with her husband, their two children, and her mother-in-law. The husband was out of state for work when Monday`s shooting happened and he returned home after being notified of the accident, police said.
