Landslide kills 19 at construction site in China

USPA News - A landslide buried a camp for workers at a construction site in northwestern China on late Friday, killing nineteen construction workers and injuring two others, state-run media reported on Saturday. No one else is believed to remain trapped under the rubble.

The incident happened at about 9:12 p.m. local time when a landslide came down from a mountain and buried eight make-shift houses at a camp for workers at a construction site in Yan`an, a city in the Shanbei region of Shaanxi province. A total of 21 construction workers were inside the houses and were buried by the slide. The state-run Xinhua news agency said nine workers were killed at the scene while ten more died after being taken to hospital, putting the total death toll at 19. The two remaining workers were rescued from the rubble and were being treated at a local hospital on Saturday. Their condition was not immediately known. The construction workers from China Railway No. 3 Group were working on a highway expansion project which will connect Huangling City to Yan`an City. Xinhua reported that local authorities have ordered a geological survey to be carried out to prevent similar landslides in the future.
