" I wholeheartedly welcome President Petro Porochenko, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili of Georgia, and Prime Minister Iurie Leanca of the Republic of Moldova. We are here to sign the Association Agreements between the European Union and each of your countries.
These are not just any other agreements ““ but milestones in the history of our relations and for Europe as a whole. In Kiev and elswhere, people gave their lives for this closer link to the European Union. We will not forget them ". (Herman Van Rompy, President of the European Council on 27 June 2014 in Brussels).
Herman Van Rompuy welcomed the agreement signed between the EU and Moldova and Georgia, Ukraine in particular for whom this official link is essential in this period affected by the conflict in the east of the country (border with Russia). He emphasized including that this signature is only the starting point of effective cooperation.
It necessarily follows a strengthening both political and economic to ensure better stability and prosperity near the European continent. This will involve rights and duties, such as sharing common values of democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms very attached to the European Union that governs its laws. These laws print the legal framework for the application of these principles of cooperation, to which they shall surrender.
He ended his statement by "To fully benefit from what they can offer, your three countries will continue pursuing efforts to transform your societies, depending democracy and modernising the economy. This is the path you have chosen "
President Poroshenko gave a press conference at the Council of the European Union, appeared, smiling and determined to meet the expectations of the European Union in waving the pen he used to officially sign the agreement, not least history given the current environment in Ukraine. "I´m very happy of this conclusion, the only problem is security. Ukraine is always under attack, and I´m looking forward to enhance investments and creating jobs with UE and US".
Indeed, the Ukrainian President is satisfied of that reconciliation strategic and geopolitical with the European Union that fully ensures its support to Ukraine in the Russian offensive, even if he said " I hope real dialogue with the President of pacification M Putin, given the military hostilities that have continued despite the request to cease fire on both sides. "
The commitment of the EU, reaffirmed at the time, offers another reason for rejoicing for Ukraine, which will be supported in the process of economic stabilization.
This was recently demonstrated the two recent significant Commission disbursements totalling €M 750 in the framework of the State Building Contract and the Macro Financial Assistance.
Besides, following its March conclusions and the decision not to recognise the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol, the European Council welcomes the work undertaken by the Commission to give effect to this policy and the decision to prohibit the import of goods from Crimea and Sevastopol which do not have a Ukrainian certificate.
The European Council recalls that the European Commission, the EEAS and the member states have been undertaking preparatory work on targeted measures, as it requested in March, so that further steps can be taken without delay. The European Council underlines its commitment to reconvene at any time for further significant restrictive measures. (Statements European Council, 27 June Brussels).
"My first message is that the European Union stands by your side more than ever before. You have our support and solidarity, and our recognition of your territorial integrity. My second message is that there is nothing in these agreements, nor in the European Union´s approach that might arms Russia in any way.
The European Union stands ready to engage with Russia as much as need be, to dispel misunderstandings where they my exist and to chart together a safer future for our common continent "
Herman Van Rompuy, the outgoing president of the European Council concluded his statement with optimism about the future of sharing and support for the new generations who are building the future of Europe, all appealed by a delicate diplomatic approach.
He also chaired his last council on July 16 following the end of its mandate, since it was clearly announced that Jean-Claude Juncker will replace him printing another style and necessarily with another diplomatic approach that will his signature, as he used the seats of political circles. History repeats itself, since 2009, the Belgian Van Rompuy took the same position as Chairman of the Board, at the expense of, JC Juncker from Luxembourg. (Source of European Council.)
