USPA NEWS - The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, suspended his entire official agenda this Thursday after confirming that the French Prime Minister, Emmanuel Macron, with whom he met this week, has tested positive for coronavirus. Sánchez will keep quarantine in the Moncloa palace until the next day 24.
Pedro Sánchez was scheduled to attend this Thursday, along with King Felipe VI, an act of tribute to the last president of the Second Spanish Republic, Manuel Azaña. The President of the Government has suspended his attendance at the event and has announced that he will not resume his official acts until Christmas Eve. This same Thursday he will undergo a diagnostic test to confirm if he was infected or not, when last Monday he ate with Macron at the Elysee Palace, the seat of the French Government.
This week, Sánchez appeared to urge Spaniards "not to lower their guard" in the fight against the coronavirus. With just over a week to Christmas, all Spanish regions register spikes in infections, which experts justify by the festivities of the Constitution and the Immaculate Virgin. To prevent contagions from soaring, the Spanish Government advised the regions to close their territories on the perimeter and only allow interregional travel between December 23 and 26, and December 30 and January 2. Family reunions are extended to 10 people, when they are not living together.
However, the Government gave the regions freedom to toughen these measures if the infection figures so advise. And most have announced that they will toughen them for fear that the expansion of the coronavirus will occur uncontrollably. Only Madrid has refused to close its territory. In the most endearing and familiar parties of the year, Spaniards worry that they will not be able to spend Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve and New Years with their families. For this reason, almost all regions have announced that they will allow interregional travel in the two mentioned periods, although only to visit relatives.
