EU welcomes the election of Joe Biden as new US President

The EU congratules the elected 46º US President, Joe Biden, for his election. In a statement, the President of the EU, Charles Michel, on Saturday expressed the will of the European Union to continue collaborating with the new US administration.
“The EU is closely following the Presidential and Congressional elections in the United States. We take note of the latest development in the electoral process. On this basis the EU congratulates President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on reaching enough Electoral Votes,“ said the EU President, Charles Michel. “We welcome the record voter turnout. We follow the process of certification of results and are confident that the US electoral system will soon announce the final outcome,“ he added.
And concluded: “The EU underlines, once again, its commitment to a strong transatlantic partnership and stands ready to engage with the elected President, new Congress and Administration.“ The EU maintains open negotiations with Washington on the tariffs that the United States applies to European products. An issue on which Brussels hopes to make progress with the new US administration.
Another matter of common interest is bilateral defense collaboration within NATO. Following the threats from Washington and its demand for a greater contribution from the European NATO countries, the EU intends to strengthen transatlantic collaboration and ensure the US contribution to the defense of the West.
