During his invited speech Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro used his time the UN General Assembly opening speech to promote a conservative agenda focused on ideals that centered on limiting laws that protect both human rights and the environment in Brazil. The Brazilian president insisted that the United States and the policies of Donald Trump were in his favor however the United Nations may have just ambushed Bolsonaro.
With a clear understanding that many of Bolsonaros voters are conservative Christians, a host of foreign leaders including Donald Trump took the time to attend a meeting calling for the protection of religious freedom and in doing so, sent a clear message to the Brazilian president to not let votes come in the way of freedom for all.
Answering Bolsonaro's and other leaders blatant disregard for the environment 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg reminded the world that "My message is we'll be watching you. "This is all wrong. I shouldn't be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you!"
Greta Thunberg's message rings true with the world's concern over the deforestation of the amazon and hopefully galvinizes a global response to force protection of nature reserves and indigenous Indians, people. Despite a pattern of ignoring his poor international reputation, polls now are beginning to show a rejection of his presidency from within his own country. His recent attempts to limit free enterprise, silence the press and promotes violence and hates speech against minorities, including the LGBTQ community may finally be catching up with him.
Ignoring laws and circumventing the Brazillian constitution, bad management, and intimidation of the judicial system, have begun taking a toll on everyday Brazilians The people Bolsonaro represents are the very people who may one day rise up and take control of not only their government, their environment, and their religious freedoms but also of their futures, and they won't need a pulpit at the general assembly to do it.
