USPA NEWS - The King of Spain, Felipe VI, celebrated on last Thursday the fifth anniversary of his proclamation, which occurred on June 19, 2014. The monarch was surrounded by civil society for the celebration, in an act in which he imposed the Cross of Civil Merit to several citizens who have distinguished themselves for their services to Spain. During the ceremony, Felipe VI appealed to the coexistence of all Spaniards and summoned them to build a common future in defense of democracy and freedom.
The first five years of Felipe VI's reign have been the most convulsive in the recent Spanish history. The King has had to make an effort to return the lost prestige to the monarchy and recover the respect of the citizens, lost in large part by the mistakes of the previous monarch, Juan Carlos I, “hunted“ by the press on a safari in Bostwana, but also because it has had to face the greatest threat to the unity of Spain with the Catalan secessionist intent. Sticking to what dictates the current Constitution, Felipe VI has been shown as the main guarantor of the unity of Spain, the greatest defender of the Constitution and the arbitrator against the polarization of the society.
The firmness of the King is endorsed by 64% of Spaniards who approve the work of the monarch. But not all the members of the Royal Family get the same support: the previous monarch, Juan Carlos I, occupies the penultimate place in the ratings of the Spaniards, who forget their contribution to the democratization of the country, and the current Queen, Letizia, it occupies the last place. In spite of this, Spain remains a monarchical country, as shown by the acts in which the kings participate, which are acclaimed by hundreds of citizens. "The actions of the King must be exemplary," said the monarch during the act of decoration of the distinguished Spaniards for their services to Spain.
While this event was taking place, a tribute to the King organized by the Spanish Army was held in the Plaza de Colón in Madrid. With the solemn raising of a great national flag, the military wanted to remember the King, its supreme commander, on the fifth anniversary of its proclamation.
