Spain filed a complaint against Catalan separatists

USPA NEWS - The Spanish Prosecutor General of the State presented on Monday complaints against the former regional government of Catalonia and the independentist members of the Catalan Parliament Bureau, for the alleged crimes of rebellion, sedition, embezzlement and others related to the declaration of independence of Catalonia. The prosecutor did not request the arrest of the former Catalan leaders, although he reserves the right to request it after the declaration of the accused before the judge.

The crime of rebellion is punished in the Spanish Penal Code with between 15 and 30 years in prison, while the secession can carry a penalty of up to 15 years in prison. The prosecutor filed the complaints against all former members of the government in the National Court, having lost the status of gauged after his dismissal. However, the complaints against the pro-independence members of the Parliament's Bureau were presented to the Supreme Court, since all of them are part of the permanent government of the House, which after its dissolution is in charge of maintaining the basic activity of the Parliament until the elections. of next December 21.

The announcement of the complaints after the dismissal of those responsible for the regional government of Catalonia, in application of article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, which empowers the Spanish Government to take political and administrative control of Catalonia, led to the suspension of the meeting of the Bureau of the regional Parliament scheduled for this Tuesday, after the president of the Chamber, Carme Forcadell, assumed the dissolution of the Parliament. They have also accepted their dismissals responsible for the Catalan regional Police and the delegate of the Catalan government in Brussels.

The former president of the regional government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, traveled to the Belgian capital on Monday. Although nobody confirmed this, rumors circulated throughout the day that the former Catalan leader could ask for political asylum in Belgium. The Belgian Minister of Asylum and Migration, Theo Francken, affirmed this weekend that his Government could welcome the former Catalan leaders, although he was immediately disavowed by the Belgian Prime Minister, Charles Michel. A spokesman for the Belgian Government insisted on Monday that Puigdemont does not qualify for political asylum in his country.

Puigdemont and the members of his government must declare soon before the judge. According to the prosecutor, the complaints are the consequence of "the decisions and acts that over the last two years have led to an institutional crisis that culminated in the unilateral declaration of independence, with total disregard for our Constitution, on October 7." Although it does not request the detention of the former Catalan leaders, it will ask for it if they do not appear to testify before the judge and given the seriousness of the incidents that are attributed to them.
